Our Story, Our People, Our Passion
The Winning Post stands as a quintessential example of a traditional British pub, seamlessly merging charm and character with a commitment to exceptional service and quality dining. Nestled in a tranquil setting along Merrington View near Kirk Merrington, the establishment boasts a welcoming atmosphere that invites patrons to unwind and enjoy their time, whether they are long-standing regulars or first-time visitors passing through County Durham.
Customers frequently praise the outstanding food, with hearty portions that exemplify the essence of home-cooked meals. The menu features a variety of classic pub dishes prepared with care and attention, and the impressive Sunday lunch — complete with generous servings of golden Yorkshire puddings, perfectly roasted meats and fresh seasonal vegetables — has garnered particular acclaim. It is a tradition that families return for week after week, a testament to the consistent quality that our kitchen team delivers.
The decor, reminiscent of a bygone era, complements the pub's character beautifully. Warm timber beams, exposed stonework and traditional furnishings create an ambiance that feels both nostalgic and comforting, transporting guests to the golden age of the British country inn. Every detail, from the vintage prints on the walls to the soft glow of candlelight on the tables, has been thoughtfully considered to enhance your dining experience.
At the heart of everything we do is a dedication to honest, quality pub dining and genuine hospitality.
Our kitchen team is committed to using the finest ingredients available, sourcing locally wherever possible to support County Durham's wonderful producers and farmers. Every dish on our menu is freshly prepared to order — we believe that shortcuts have no place in great cooking, and our guests can taste the difference in every mouthful. From our hand-battered fish to our slow-braised casseroles, every plate leaves the kitchen with pride.
The staff at The Winning Post, noted for their friendliness and attentiveness, enhance the overall experience and ensure that every guest feels valued and well-cared-for. Whether you're a couple enjoying a romantic evening, a family celebrating a special occasion or a group of friends gathering for a Saturday afternoon, our team will go above and beyond to make your visit memorable.
